How Does It Work

Vasopressin, Vasostrict Vasopressin stimulates a family of arginine vasopressin (AVP) receptors, oxytocin receptors, and purinergic receptors. Vasopressin at doses used for vasodilatory shock increases systemic vascular resistance and mean arterial blood pressure which results causes a responsive decrease in heart rate and cardiac output.

Before starting Vasopressin, Vasostrict make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have cardiovascular disease, a history of migraines, renal impairment, vascular disease, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Vasopressin, Vasostrict use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as diabetes insipidus, water intoxication, and tissue necrosis (from extravasation).

Usual Dosing

IV: Initial: 0.01 units/minute. Maximum dose: 0.07 units/minute. Dosing in the prescribing information may not reflect current clinical practice.

Pharmacist Tips On Using

How to Take: Dilute prior to administration. Infusion through central line is recommended. Ensure proper needle or catheter placement prior to and during infusion to avoid extravasation. If extravasation occurs, stop infusion immediately and disconnect then gently aspirate extravasated solution but do NOT flush the line. Next remove the needle/cannula and elevate the extremity. Initiate topical nitroglycerin. Apply dry, warm compresses. Store intact vials between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F). Do not freeze.

Side Effects

Atrial fibrillation, bradycardia, ischemic heart disease, limb ischemia (distal), low cardiac output, right heart failure, shock (hemorrhagic), skin lesion (ischemic), hyponatremia, mesenteric ischemia, decreased platelet count, hemorrhage (intractable), increased serum bilirubin, renal insufficiency, diabetes insipidus (reversible)

Note the frequency of side effects has not been determined in clinical trials
