FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Compounding?
Compounding refers to the practice of making customized preparations of medications for patients who are unable to take the medication in its mass-produced form. Compounding pharmacists work with healthcare practitioners to determine the unique characteristics required to accommodate the needs of a patient. Compounding pharmacists can provide a variety of alterations to an existing medication: i) change the ingredient profile of an existing medication by removing fillers, allergens and gluten; ii) change the pharmacokinetics of a medication; iii) change the dosage form, appearance to taste of a medication. Compounding is essentially an individualized, personalized service that does not take the “one-size-fits-all” approach like drug manufacturers.
What Types of Services are Commonly Provided by Compounding Pharmacies?
There are a countless number of different compounding services that can be offered to patients
but the most common are the following:
- Customizing drug dosages and strengths
- Creating a unique combination of medications to improve compliance
- Reformulating an existing medication without specific ingredients (i.e. gluten, fillers, dyes)
- Changing the dosage form of an existing medication
- Compounding a discontinued medication
- Changing the flavor of the medication to improve compliance
What Should I Look for When Choosing a Compounding Pharmacy?
Always make sure that the compounding pharmacy has undergone a rigorous process of inspection, training and certification to meet and exceed regulatory requirements and standards established by a recognized accreditation organization. Accreditation reflects the company’s dedication and commitment to meeting the industry’s standard. The Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB) offers one of the most comprehensive compliance solutions in the industry with standards based on the U.S. Pharmacopeia Convention Guidelines (USP).
How Should a Prescription to be Compounded by UBACARE Pharmacy be Written?

- Date the prescription is written;
- Name and address of the patient;
- Generic name of the drug(s) or active ingredients;
- Strength or dose (in mcg/mcg/or percent)
- Quantity to be dispensed;
- Dosage instructions including the frequency, interval or maximum daily dose;

- Name, identification number and signature of the healthcare practitioner authorizing the prescription;
Our pharmacists are always happy to answer any questions you may have about compounded
medications, and to discuss formulations with you. Please contact us if you need more information about writing a compounded medication prescription.
Can Insurance Cover Compounded Medications?

How Can I Get a Price for a Compounded Medication?
Each prescription is made specifically to the specifications of your doctor. To ensure an accurate price, one of our pharmacists or pharmacy technicians can provide you with pricing over the phone, text or email.
