Description: Antiviral Agent

“ALERT: US Boxed Warning

Hematologic toxicity:
Severe leukopenia, neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia, and bone marrow failure including aplastic anemia have been reported in patients treated with valganciclovir.

Impairment of fertility:
Based on animal data and limited human data, valganciclovir may cause temporary or permanent inhibition of spermatogenesis in males and suppression of fertility in females.

Fetal toxicity:
Based on animal data, valganciclovir has the potential to cause birth defects in humans.

Mutagenesis and carcinogenesis:
Based on animal data, valganciclovir has the potential to cause cancers in humans.”

How Does It Work

Valganciclovir, Valcyte Valganciclovir is rapidly converted to ganciclovir in the body. Ganciclovir is phosphorylated to a competitive inhibitor of DNA polymerase resulting in inhibition of viral DNA synthesis.

Indications For Use

Cytomegalovirus prophylaxis (solid organ transplant recipients); CMV retinitis treatment (AIDS-related)

Precautions

Before starting Valganciclovir, Valcyte make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have renal impairment, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Valganciclovir, Valcyte use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as acute renal failure, blood dyscrasias, teratogenicity, and carcinogenicity.

Usual Dosing

Oral: 900mg once or twice daily
