Hyperkalemia:

Abnormal elevation of serum potassium levels (5.5 mEq/L or more) can occur with hydrochlorothiazide/triamterene. Hyperkalemia is more likely to occur in patients with renal impairment and diabetes (even without evidence of renal impairment), or elderly or severely ill patients.”

Hydrochlorothiazide+Triamterene, Dyazide is a diuretic that works in two distinctly different ways.  Hydrochlorothiazide blocks sodium reabsorption in the distal tubules causing increased excretion of sodium and water as well as potassium and hydrogen ions.  While triamterene blocks sodium channels in the late distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct, which inhibits sodium reabsorption in the lumen which accounts for its natriuretic, diuretic and antihypertensive effects.

Hypertension, edema

Before starting Hydrochlorothiazide+Triamterene, Dyazide make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  There are a number of adverse effects with using Hydrochlorothiazide+Triamterene, Dyazide which include: electrolyte disturbances (i.e. hypokalemia/hyperkalemia, hypochloremic alkalosis, hyponatremia), gout in high risk populations, photosensitivity and should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, hepatic and/or renal impairment, hypercholesterolemia, kidney stones, parathyroid disease and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Oral: Take 1 to 2 tablets daily.

Can be taken with or without food.

The frequency of side effects has not been recorded but have included:

Angina, cardiac arrhythmia, tachycardia, orthostatic hypotension, anxiety, depression, dizziness, headache, vertigo, skin rash, photosensitivity, urticaria, acidosis, diabetes mellitus, glycosuria, electrolyte disturbances, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, pancreatitis, tongue discoloration, vomiting, urine discoloration, jaundice, blurred vision.

1. What do I do if I show signs of low potassium levels (muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, tremor, muscle cramps, constipation)?
   Seek immediate medical attention, it is a rare but potentially serious side effect
