Tizanidine, Zanaflex is an alpha2-adrenergic agonist agent which reduces muscle spasticity by increasing presynaptic inhibition of the motor neurons.  The greatest effects are on the polysynaptic pathways.  Tizanidine, Zanaflex reduces the facilitation of spinal motor neurons and subsequently reduces muscle spasticity attributed to a spinal injury or neurological disorder such as multiple sclerosis.

Spasticity

Before starting Tizanidine, Zanaflex make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Tizanidine, Zanaflex can worsen hepatoxicity, contribute to hypotension, cause sedation and visual hallucinations in some patients.

Oral: 4mg to 8mg every 8 hours as needed.

You can open and sprinkle the contents inside the capsule on food.

Hypotension, drowsiness, dizziness, xerostomia, asthenia, bradycardia, nervousness, visual hallucination, constipation, vomiting, urinary tract infection, urinary frequency, infection, blurred vision, pharyngitis, rhinitis.

Note this is not a complete list of side effects for Tizanidine, Zanaflex only common ones.

1. What can I do if Tizanidine, Zanaflex sedates me too much?
   It is a common side effect but in most cases the tablet can be split for smaller dosages to alleviate fatigue.  Discuss with your pharmacist or physician a plan to manage this or potential alternative medications.
