Terbinafine/Lamisil is a synthetic allylamine derivative that inhibits squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in sterol biosynthesis in fungi. This results in a deficiency in ergosterol within the fungal cell membrane and results in fungal cell death.

Officially indicated to treat onychomycosis, tinea capitis and other dermatologic fungal infections depending on the formulation.

Use in caution in patients with allylamine antifungal sensitivity

Can cause taste disturbance 

Hepatic failure has been reported in patients with and without pre-existing hepatic disease.  Do not use in patients with hepatic impairment 

Serious skin and hypersensitivity reactions including (i.e. Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, bullous dermatitis, drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms [DRESS] syndrome) have occurred. 

Smell disturbance (including loss of smell) has been reported

Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), including thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic uremic syndrome, have been reported (some fatal)

Use with caution in patients with renal impairment 

Onychomycosis

Oral: Take 250mg once daily for 6 weeks (fingernail) and/or 12 weeks (toenail)

Tinea Pedis, Tinea Corporis, Tinea Cruris

Topical (Cream, Spray):  Apply to the affected area once daily for 1 week.

Cutaneous Candidiasis

Topical (Cream):  Apply to the affected areas once to twice daily for 1 to 2 weeks.

Tinea Versicolor

Topical (Cream, Spray):  Apply to the affected areas once to twice daily for 1 to 2 weeks.

How to Apply/Take Terbinafine, Lamisil:  When administering terbinafine/Lamisil orally.  You can take the tablets with/without food; for the granules take with non-acidic food and swallow the granules whole without chewing them.  When applying Lamisil/Terbinafine topically, wash your hands before and after application. 

The frequency of side effects is not defined, dependent upon the dose, duration, and concomitant therapy.
