HMG-CoA Reductase is the rate limiting enzyme in cholesterol production.  Inhibiting this enzyme results in increased LDL cholesterol catabolism (breakdown) in liver cells (where most cholesterol is produced).  HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors such as Rosuvastatin/Crestor also stabilize blood vessels and reduces inflammation at the site of coronary plaques and inhibits clot formation at these sites which are normally the cause of myocardial infarctions (heart attacks).

Rosuvastatin/Crestor is indicated for various dyslipidemia, prevention of cardiovascular disease, reduce risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (may also be used for conditions not listed)

Before starting Rosuvastatin/Crestor make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have kidney disease, liver disease, are a heavy user of alcohol, or are pregnant or breastfeeding

5mg-40mg once daily

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, swallow whole, take consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature                   

You Need to Avoid: The natural supplement “red yeast rice” has similar activity as this medication and can increase risk of adverse events

Myalgia (muscle pain), headache, weakness

1. I am getting unexplained muscle pain since starting this medication what should I do?
   It is a side effect that can occur in some patients which usually can be resolved with a dose reduction or by changing to an alternative HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor.  Discuss with your physician but in a lot of cases they will try many things before giving up on this class of medication as they have a lot of evidence that they reduce risk of heart attack and stroke
2. I am having severe muscle pain, nausea, confusion an irregular heartbeat and/or my urine is very dark, like the color of iced tea, what do I do?
   Seek immediate medical attention, it could be a rare but serious condition called rhabdomyolysis.  It is a medical emergency that results in muscle breakdown which causes a large release of potassium from broken down muscle cells which can cause cardiac arrhythmia and kidney damage
