“ALERT: US Boxed Warning

Cardiovascular thrombotic events:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may occur early in treatment and may increase with duration of use.

Oxaprozin is contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

​Gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation:
NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events, including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients and patients with a prior history of peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding are at a greater risk for serious GI events.”

Oxaprozin, Daypro reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX-1 and 2) enzymes, which results in decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors.  It has antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Osteoarthritis; Rheumatoid arthritis

Before starting Oxaprozin, Daypro make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have asthma, past bariatric surgery, previous coronary artery bypass graft surgery, hepatic impairment, hypertension, renal impairment, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Oxaprozin, Daypro use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as anaphylaxis, cardiovascular events, CNS depression, gastrointestinal inflammation/ulcer, hematologic effects, hyperkalemia, photosensitivity reactions, and skin reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Oral: 600-1800mg daily in divided doses

How to Take: May be administered without regard to food; administer with food to decrease GI distress 

Edema, confusion, depression, disturbed sleep, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, sedation, pruritus, skin rash, abdominal distress, abdominal pain, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, gastrointestinal perforation (with gross bleeding), gastrointestinal ulcer, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, dysuria, urinary frequency, anemia, prolonged bleeding time, increased liver enzymes, tinnitus, renal insufficiency

1. What do I do if I show signs of high potassium levels (nausea, weakness, irregular heartbeat, tingling sensation, loss of movement)
   Seek immediate medical attention, it is a rare but potentially serious side effect.
2. What do I do if side effects are intolerable?
   If side effects are causing a lot of distress speak to your physician as soon as possible to discuss options.
