Methazolamide, Neptazane is a noncompetitive carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.  Carbonic anhydrase is found in the cells of the luminal border of the proximal tubule of the nephron.  When inhibited it increases urine volume and pH with a subsequent decrease in the excretion of titratable acid and ammonia.

Glaucoma

Before starting Methazolamide, Neptazane make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (sulfa) or medications you currently take, if you have kidney dysfunction, liver dysfunction, adrenal gland failure, hyperchloremic acidosis, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, angle closure glaucoma, diabetes, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Methazolamide, Neptazane use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as impaired mental alertness, impaired physical coordination, and electrolyte disturbances.

Oral: 50 to 100 mg 2 to 3 times/day

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.   

Confusion, drowsiness, fatigue, flaccid paralysis, malaise, paresthesia, seizure, erythema multiforme, skin photosensitivity, skin rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, urticaria, electrolyte disturbance, glycosuria, metabolic acidosis, decreased appetite, diarrhea, dysgeusia, melena, nausea, vomiting, crystalluria, hematuria, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, bone marrow depression, hemolytic anemia, immune thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, fulminant hepatic necrosis, hepatic insufficiency, anaphylaxis, hypersensitivity reaction, myopia, auditory disturbance, tinnitus, nephrolithiasis, polyuria, fever
