Doxycycline/Doxycin/Vibramycin binds to ribosomal subunits (30S,50S) of certain bacteria thereby stopping protein synthesis for the cell eventually resulting in cell death. May also affect cytoplasmic membrane.  

Doxycycline/Doxycin/Vibramycin is used on and off label for various infections depending on your common local bacterial strains for various infections and based on local resistance patterns.  Not all antibiotics work for all infections and efficacy can vary from area to area and vary with time.  It is common in North America for use in acne vulgaris, for bite wound infections, COPD exacerbations, malaria (prevention and treatment), pneumonia, acne rosacea, etc.

Before starting Doxycycline/Doxycin/Vibramycin make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding

20mg-200mg once to twice a day depending on the condition it is used for.  It is available in many salts/forms however dosages are based on calculated doxycycline base.

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, swallow whole with a whole glass of water and do not lay down for 15 minutes after to prevent reflux, take consistently at same times each day usually with food to minimize risk of esophageal damage unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature

You Need to Avoid: Excessive sunlight exposure, alcohol may reduce absorption, food may decrease absorption (high fat/dairy especially but due to gastric side effects most recommend with food regardless), iron and calcium supplements may reduce absorption

Hypertension, anxiety, increased blood sugar, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nasopharyngitis, sinusitis.

Note this is not a complete list of side effects, only common ones with diarrhea and abdominal pain being the most common. 

1. What do I do if side effects are intolerable?
   If side effects are causing a lot of distress speak to your physician as soon as possible to discuss options.
2. Why do I need to avoid sunlight?
   This medication may increase sun sensitivity and result in various skin reactions of varying severity.  This includes avoiding tanning booths.  This medication can be used for malaria prevention and many locations it is used are very sunny.  If this is the case try to minimize exposure when possible, make sure to use sunscreen liberally following the products recommended application schedule, and wear clothing to cover as much skin as possible.  Discuss with your physician what to do if a skin reaction starts to develop while abroad.
