Acetylcysteine, Acetadose/Parvolex is a hepatoprotective drug that restores glutathione in the liver and conjugates acetaminophen to treat an acetaminophen overdose that can cause serious hepatic impairment.  Acetylcysteine, Acetadose/Parvolex also has mucolytic properties which helps lower mucous viscosity so that your excessive mucous can be coughed up.

Acetaminophen Overdose

Before starting Acetylcysteine, Acetadose/Parvolex make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.   Intravenous administration of Acetylcysteine, Acetadose/Parvolex can cause fluid overload resulting in hyponatremia, seizure and even death in some cases.  Use with caution in patients with asthma or any history of bronchospasm as this patient population is at an increased risk of hypersensitivity reaction.

Oral (72-hour regimen): Loading dose 140mg/kg followed by a maintenance dose of 70mg/kg every 4 hours; repeat if emesis occurs within 1 hour of administration for a total of 18 doses.

Intravenous (21-hour regimen): Loading dose 150mg/kg (maximum: 15g) infused over 1 hour.  Followed by a second dose of 50mg/kg (maximum: 5g) infused over 4 hours.  Followed by a third dose of 100mg/kg (maximum: 10g) infused over 16 hours.

Only the 72-hour oral and 21-hour IV regimens are FDA approved.

How to Take:  Take effervescent tablets within 2 hours of preparation.  If you vomit within 1 hour of administration, repeat the dose.  A 5% solution can also be used with the same directions for administration.

Autoimmune disease, anaphylactoid reaction, flushing, tachycardia, edema, urticaria, rash, pruritus, vomiting, nausea.
