Acetazolamide, Diamox works as a reversible inhibitor of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase resulting in reduction of hydrogen ion secretion at renal tubule and an increased renal excretion of sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, and water; this leads to an excretion of excess water.  The result is a decrease in blood acidity and intracranial and intraocular pressure.

Before starting Acetazolamide, Diamox make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (sulfa) or medications you currently take, you may notice a decrease in mental alertness.  Acetazolamide, Diamox should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, hepatic impairment, and those at risk of respiratory acidosis.

Oral: 125mg up to 4000mg daily depending on indication.

How to Take:  Take with food.  You may experience a bitter taste and can try taking with either a carbonated beverage or suspension such as chocolate or cherry syrup to mask the taste.

The frequency of side effects is not well defined, however the following have been reported flushing, ataxia, confusion, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, paresthesia, electrolyte abnormalities, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, glycosuria, decreased appetite, crystalluria, hematuria, aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.
