How Does It Work

Tolterodine, Detrol is a competitive muscarinic receptor antagonist and inhibits the smooth muscle surrounding the bladder from contracting which prevents symptoms such as urgency and frequency.

Precautions

Before starting Tolterodine, Detrol make sure your physician is aware of any allergies and medications you currently take. Anticholinergic drugs may cause drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and/or blurred vision, which may impair physical or mental abilities; patients must be cautioned about performing tasks which require mental alertness. Use with caution in patients with Alzheimer’s, bladder flow obstruction, GI obstructive disorders, glaucoma, liver/kidney impairment, or myasthenia gravis.

Usual Dosing

Immediate release tablet: 2 mg twice daily; the dose may be lowered to 1 mg twice daily based on individual response and tolerability
Dosing adjustment in patients concurrently taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors – 1 mg twice daily

Extended release capsule: 4 mg once daily; dose may be lowered to 2 mg once daily based on individual response and tolerability
Dosing adjustment in patients concurrently taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors – 2 mg once daily
