Lansoprazole, Prevacid decreases acid secretion in gastric parietal cells through inhibition of (H+, K+)-ATPase enzyme system, blocking the final step in gastric acid production.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Before starting Lansoprazole, Prevacid make sure your physician is aware of any allergies and medications you currently take.  Use of proton pump inhibitors in general can increase your risk of C-difficile, especially in hospitalized patients.  The long-term use of proton pump inhibitors is discouraged because of an increased incidence of osteoporosis-related bone fractures of the hip, spine, or wrist may occur.  In addition, there is a increase risk of fundic gland polyps and interstitial nephritis.

Oral: 15mg to 30mg once daily

How to Take: 

Oral: Take 30 minutes to 60 minutes before a meal; best if taken before breakfast.  If administering twice daily, first dose should be administered before breakfast and the second dose before dinner. The intact granules should not be chewed or crushed; however, several options are available for those patients unable to swallow capsules: Orally disintegrating tablets: place the tablet on tongue; allow to dissolve (with or without water) until particles can be swallowed. 

Abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, headache.

1. I am concerned about long term side effects, why does my physician insist I take this?
   Leaving certain gastric conditions untreated such as GERD can result in increased risk of complications such as esophageal cancer.  Your physician has considered the risks and found them to be far less than the benefit.  If you are still concerned discuss your options with your physician however do not just stop the medication yourself.
