Furosemide is a potent diuretic that, if given in excessive amounts, can lead to a profound diuresis with water and electrolyte depletion. Therefore, careful medical supervision is required and dose and dose schedule must be adjusted to the individual patient’s needs.”

Furosemide/Lasix inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the loop of Henle, as well as the proximal and distal tubules of the nephron (functional unit of the kidney) causing sodium to be excreted in the urine which bring water with it due to it forming a concentration gradient

Furosemide/Lasix is indicated for ascites (fluid buildup in abdomen from liver cirrhosis), various forms of edema (fluid buildup) (may be used for conditions not listed)

Before starting Furosemide/Lasix make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (potential for sulfa cross reactivity) or medications you currently take, if you have diabetes, gout, have had bariatric surgery, cirrhosis, an enlarged prostate, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.  This medication if given in excessive doses can result in very significant diuresis which can lead to fluid and electrolyte depletion so patients must be monitored closely.

20-160 mg daily depending on condition divided into one or two daily doses

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature , ideally taken early in the day to avoid nocturia (waking up to urinate)

You Need to Avoid: Do not skip follow up appointments or put off bloodwork requisitioned by your physician.  Serious electrolyte disturbances may occur without proper monitoring.

Orthostatic hypotension, urinary frequency, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, electrolyte disturbances, photosensitivity, stomach upset

1. Why do I have to go to the bathroom so often on Furosemide/Lasix?
   This medication helps with edema by getting rid of excess fluid, the way our bodies can rid itself of fluid quickly is through urination.  If you are urinating frequently then the medication is working.  It should be taken in the morning to avoid sleep disturbances from this issue.
