5-Alpha-Reductase Inhibitor

Proscar, Propecia/Finasteride competitively binds to type two 5-alpha reductase which are enzymes that are involved in steroid metabolism, androgen, and estrogen.  By inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone in man tissues including the prostate gland, seminal vesicles, epididymis, skin, hair follicles, liver, and brain.  The suppression in serum dihydrotestosterone levels which will reduce androgen development such as hair loss/baldness and prostate enlargement.

Officially indicated for androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment

Do not use in prostate cancer

Androgenic Alopecia (Male Pattern Loss)

Oral: Take 1mg once daily.  Continue therapy for at least 12 months to assess full clinical effect.  Daily continuous use is required to maintain the benefit.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia 

Oral: Take 5mg once daily; generally, in combination with an alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist

How to Use Finasteride, Propecia/Proscar: Take with or without meals.  Pregnant women and women of childbearing age should not touch or handle crushed or broken tablets.
