Enalapril, Vasotec is a competitive inhibitor of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and prevents the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor; results in lower levels of angiotensin II which causes an increase in plasma renin activity and a reduction in aldosterone secretion.  Hence, Enalapril, Vasotec produce vasodilation and subsequently lower blood pressure.

Heart failure, hypertension

Before starting Enalapril, Vasotec make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  As with any other angiotensin II receptor antagonist, there is are risks of hyperkalemia, cough, cholestatic jaundice, hypotension, deterioration in renal function.  Enalapril, Vasotec should be used with caution in patients who have ascites, aortic stenosis, hepatic and renal impairment, collagen vascular disease and renal artery stenosis.

Oral: Take 2.5mg to 5mg daily.

Take with or without food.

Syncope, chest pain, hypotension, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, skin rash, hyperkalemia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, weakness, bronchitis, cough, dyspnea.

1. Why can’t I stop coughing?
   It is a common side effect of Enalapril, Vasotec that is not harmful however it will likely not stop until the medication is changed so contact your physician for a similar alternative
2. What do I do if I show signs of high potassium levels (nausea, weakness, irregular heartbeat, tingling sensation, loss of movement)
   Seek immediate medical attention, it is a rare but potentially serious side effect of Enalapril, Vasotec.
