Efavirenz, Sustiva is a reverse transcriptase inhibitor which has activity against HIV-1 efavirenz has activity against HIV-1 by binding to reverse transcriptase. It consequently blocks the RNA-dependent and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activities including HIV-1 replication.

HIV-1 Infection

Before starting Efavirenz, Sustiva make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Efavirenz, Sustiva may cause central nervous system (i.e. dizziness, insomnia, hallucinations, drowsiness), fat distribution, hepatotoxicity, hypercholesterolemia, immune reconstitution syndrome, psychiatric effects, rash, QT prolongation, seizure disorder.

Oral: 600mg once daily.

Oral: Administer on an empty stomach.  Dosing at bedtime. Swallow the tablet and/or capsule whole.  The contents of the capsule can be sprinkled over food and administered within 30 minutes of mixing.

Skin rash, diarrhea, central nervous system toxicity, diarrhea, pruritis, erythema multiforme.

1. Do I have to take this medication every day?
   Do not stop taking this medication, it is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped even for a short time. The virus may develop resistance to this medication and become harder to treat.
2. What do I do if side effects are intolerable?
   If side effects are causing a lot of distress speak to your physician as soon as possible to discuss options.
