Atorvastatin, Lipitor lower cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver and by increasing the number of hepatic LDL receptors on the cell-surface to enhance uptake and catabolism of LDL.  Atorvastatin, Lipitor also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to improve endothelial function by reducing inflammation at the site of coronary plaque and by inhibiting platelet aggregation.

Before starting Atorvastatin, Lipitor make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, you may experience severe muscle pain.  If that is the case, please seek your doctor immediately.

Oral: 40mg to 80mg daily depending upon the indication.

How to Take:  Take with food at anytime of the day. 

Diarrhea, joint and muscle pain, nasopharyngitis.

1. I am getting unexplained muscle pain since starting this medication what should I do?
   It is a side effect that can occur in some patients which usually can be resolved with a dose reduction or by changing to an alternative HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor.  Discuss with your physician but in a lot of cases they will try many things before giving up on this class of medication as they have a lot of evidence that they reduce risk of heart attack and stroke.
2. I am having severe muscle pain, nausea, confusion an irregular heartbeat and/or my urine is very dark like the color of iced tea, what do I do?
   Seek immediate medical attention, it could be a rare but serious condition called rhabdomyolysis.  It is a medical emergency that results in muscle breakdown which causes a large release of potassium from broken down muscle cells which can cause cardiac arrythmia and kidney damage
