How Does It Work

Aklief/Trifarotene is a retinoid-like compound and acts as a potent modulator of cellular differentiation, keratinization, and inflammatory processes all of which represent important features in the pathology of acne vulgaris. Although the exact mode of action of Aklief/trifarotene is unknown, in primary pharmacology studies, trifarotene has shown a high RAR activity and a very high selectivity for RAR γ (gamma) the receptor subtype present in keratinocytes and recognized to be the most relevant in acne over RARα and RARβ.

Indications For Use

Officially indicated for the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Precautions

Do not use in patients with hypersensitivity to Trifarotene or any component of the formulation.

Watch for signs of an allergic reaction which can include: rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing or talking; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat.

Risk of photosensitivity and skin irritation

Usual Dosing

Acne Vulgaris

Topical: Apply a thin layer (1 to 4 pump actuations) to the affected areas once daily in the evening. If skin irritation does occur, you may reduce the frequency or temporarily stop therapy.

How to Use Trifarotene, Aklief: Apply Trifarotene, Aklief as directed by your doctor and use only on your skin; keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes. Do not apply on any mucous membranes, broken or abraded skin. Moisturizers may be used, as necessary.

Side Effects

The most common side effects occur on at the site of skin application with the frequency of incidence dependant on the formulation and/or strength. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

1% to 10%:

Dermatologic: Sunburn (3%)

Local: Application site irritation (8%), application-site pruritus (2%)

<1%: Acne vulgaris, allergic dermatitis, application site pain, application site rash, application-site edema, erythema of skin, local dryness of skin, local skin discoloration, skin erosion
